I'm running Danum's KDE 4.2.3 upgraded to 4.2.4 from Debian-Desktop. I've got a printer problem and found a temporary work-around that is a pain in the butt. For now, it's a livable situation, but after installation of a new shinny OS with KDE 4.3 if the problem still exists, it will be an "issue."
My HP Deskjet printer died. Stuff happens. So I bought a new Epson "All In One Workforce 310" I found on sale at Newegg using the theory that Epson products always work with Linux. Obviously not the smartest thing I've ever done.
Anyway, I used the automatic install feature to install the printer. It set me up with a "Workforce 40" driver. The Workforce 40 driver does not work with this printer. Okay, I thought, I'll just do a manual install. And therein lies the problem. There is no "Workforce" anything driver listed. I tried a couple of other drivers with no luck. Probably I should have called Epson support to see if one of their "Stylus" or other drivers would operate the printer portion of the All In One. I didn't.
Instead I plugged in to another hard drive and installed the printer on PCLinuxOS. The printer worked a treat with the "Workforce 30" driver. The scanner also worked using one of the Epson scanner drivers, which I wrote on a piece of paper and have now misplaced. So now I can print and scan with the new equipment as long as I'm running PCLinuxOS. To print something from Danum 4.2.3/Debian-Desktop 4.2.4 I need to use a memory stick and do some unplugging and replugging. It's a good thing I don't put the sides on the computer. Like I said, the procedure creates a sharp pain in the posterior.
One wonders out of which deep hidden pit the "Workforce 40" came from, since it doesn't appear in the manual set-up. Anyway, for now this is only an irritant, but it will be an "issue" if it carries over to the new 4.3. Hopefully the new kernel will solve the problem?
